Joe Turbolski, who many of you may know through his work at Thomson Broadcast, was kind enough to send me information on two do-it-yourself antennas he's been experimenting with at home. One of these is a design for a fractal antenna.My understanding of antenna design is VERY limited but I think what you're describing is adding a simple random length long wire antenna to a dipole antenna. If you were to make it exactly a multiple of the wavelength you were trying to pick up, it might work better but I believe most antennas are designed for a 1/2 wavelength.Step 1: Making the Antenna Step 1. Start with some 3/8 or 1/2 inch copper tubing. Bend a half circle in a 26 inch diameter with an additional 1 inch extra on each end. Flatten the inch on the ends and bend them OUT. Now make another half circle and bend the ends IN.Step 3. Cut off the insulation at the ends of the twin-lead wire. Twist each of the ends together and then solder it. Take another long piece of twin-lead and also strip off the ends. Attach one end to your TV and solder the other to the middle of your first piece of twin wire. This is now the transmission wire.Cut the tapes into long trips. Make them 3-4 inches long. Keep them aside as you'll need them later and get to the next step. Step 2: Cut the wires. This is a trust-the-process step and also the most crucial one.
